Libya Conflict

RTR2Q5QB
Top Pictures - 18 Feb 2013
A selection of top images relating to the revolution in Libya. Thousands took to the streets on Sunday to celebrate two years since the start of Libya's revolution and a national political leader promised to end the sense of neglect experienced by Benghazi, the country's second city.

One thousand km (620 miles) east of the capital Tripoli, Benghazi was the cradle of the revolt that ousted dictator Muammar Gaddafi, but many citizens feel that they are yet to see the fruits of their military struggle.

There are calls in the eastern region - where most of Libya's oil wealth lies - for a return to a federal political structure and more regional autonomy, which Libya had before Gaddafi seized power in a coup in 1969.

Damage to the studios of private Libyan satellite channel Libya al-Ahrar is seen after demonstrators stormed Libya al-Ahrar's grounds in Benghazi October 21, 2012. The 400 unarmed but angry protesters demanded that the channel air photographic evidence that Gaddafi's son Khamis had been killed in battle. Libyan officials had announced he had been killed in fighting in Bani Walid but that has not been confirmed. Demonstrators said they were furious over what they deemed a false rumor, saying it had helped fuel violence in Bani Walid and stir up tribal enmity. A woman is seen through a car window as she flees the besieged city of Bani Walid September 12, 2011. Forces of Libya's new rulers met "ferocious" street-by-street resistance during an assault on one of the last bastions loyal to Muammar Gaddafi, but were edging towards the ousted ruler's birthplace of Sirte. The National Transitional Council's forces, which toppled Gaddafi last month, said they were facing about 1,000 loyalist fighters in the Gaddafi stronghold of Bani Walid, far more than the 100 to 150 men they had estimated earlier, while discipline had slipped in their own ranks. Anti-Gaddafi fighters put up a rebel flag as they prepare to advance on the Libyan besieged town of Bani Walid after clashing with Gaddafi's gunmen on the outskirts of the city September 8, 2011. Muammar Gaddafi vowed to remain on Libyan soil battling NATO and the country's new leaders, dismissing reports that he had secretly fled towards bordering African states as part of a military convoy. An anti-Gaddafi fighter looks up at his weapon hanging from a window at the last checkpoint before the town of Bani Walid, currently held by pro-Gaddafi forces, in south east Tripoli September 5, 2011. Libyan forces made ready to storm a desert town held by loyalists of Muammar Gaddafi on Monday but held off in the hope of a surrender that would avoid bloodshed. On-off negotiations involving tribal elders from Bani Walid, south of Tripoli, and a fog of contradictory messages in recent days, reflect the complexities of dismantling the remnants of Gaddafi's 42-year rule and building a new political system. Photographs of Muammar Gaddafi's former spy chief and foreign minister Moussa Koussa are seen in the abandoned Libyan External Security office where he was based in Tripoli September 3, 2011. Documents found in the abandoned office of Gaddafi's intelligence chief indicate the U.S. and British spy agencies helped the fallen strongman persecute Libyan dissidents, Human Rights Watch said on Saturday. The documents were uncovered by the human rights activist group in Koussa's abandoned offices. REUTERS/Anis Mili (LIBYA - Tags: CIVIL UNREST POLITICS CONFLICT)
