Buddhist monks look at the Thai navy police boat which was swept almost 2 km (1.2 miles) inland during the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami as they visit a memorial in Khao Lak, in Thailand's Phang Nga province, about 110 km (68 miles) north of the resort island of Phuket, December 14, 2014. On the day of tsunami, Thai navy boat 813 was on patrol about one nautical mile offshore serving as a guard to members of royal family staying at one of the resorts near-by. Thailand prepares to mark the tenth anniversary of the 2004 tsunami, the deadliest on the record, that killed at least 226,000 people in 13 Asian and African countries. In Thailand, over 5300 people were killed, including several thousand foreign tourists, when the waves swamped six coastal provinces, turning some of the world's most beautiful beaches into mass graves. Zaman editor-in-chief Ekrem Dumanli greets his supporters after being released by the court outside the Justice Palace in Istanbul December 19, 2014. A Turkish court kept a media executive and three other people in custody on Friday pending trial on accusations of belonging to a terrorist group, in a case which President Tayyip Erdogan has defended as a response to "dirty operations" by his enemies. Hidayet Karaca heads Samanyolu Television which is close to the president's ally-turned foe Fethullah Gulen, a U.S.-based Muslim cleric. Erdogan accuses Gulen of seeking to topple him through supporters in the judiciary and police. The European Union, which Turkey is seeking to join, has said last weekend's police raids to detain Karaca and other media workers was contrary to European values but Erdogan told the bloc to mind its own business. Dumanli, editor-in-chief of the Gulen-linked Zaman newspaper, was released but forbidden from travelling abroad before trial. Seven more people whom prosecutors sought remanded in custody in the case were also released pending trial. REUTERS/Murad Sezer (TURKEY - Tags: CRIME LAW POLITICS MEDIA TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY)
