Orange and red smoke from the Flamengo club supporters enshroud a lone television technician as he waits for the start of another match at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana, the world's largest soccer stadium. Crowds at Maracana regularly attend games with fireworks and smoke rockets, in addition to banners and flags. Incidents of crowd violence over the past 40 years have been few and isolated. Built in 1950 as the main World Cup venue, Maracana has enough space for approximately 150,000 fans, although the actual number is limited to just over 100,000.
