31 Dec. 1997
A chicken vendor re-paints rusty cages at his stall inside a Hong Kong market December 31, after all his chickens were slaughtered. The decision to slaughter all the chickens in the territory was taken after health experts said the deadly "bird flu" virus was probably transmitted directly from chickens to human. The government asked chicken vendors to clean up their stalls before renewing their licenses.
