FILE PHOTO SENATOR STROM THURMOND
FILE PHOTO 11FEB97 - Senator Strom Thurmond, the oldest person ever to serve in Congress, has opted to prolong a hospital stay triggered by respiratory ills even though doctors found him fit for release, Thurmond's office said December 31. Physicians caring for Thurmond, 95, shown here in a February 11 1997 file photo, determined that his respiratory infection was "?n check and that he was fit to be discharged" from Eisenhower Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia, but the senator felt he needed more time to rest and wanted to stay at the army hospital for at least another 48 hours, the statement said.
