File photo of Pope John Paul II with former Archbishop of Rio Dom Helder Camara during visit to Brazil in 1997. File photo of Pope John Paul II greeting former Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro Dom Helder Camara as he arrived at the Metropolitan cathedral in Rio, during his visit there on October 4, 1997. Camara, the renowned human rights and agrarian reform crusader, died on August 27, 1999. The 90-year-old Camara was a key proponent of Liberation Theology, which swept through Latin America in the 1970s and 1980s. It takes the view of the poor in an attempt to develop a theology of Christian activism to end social injustice. Pope John Paul II clung tenuously to life on April 2, 2005, running a fever and slipping in and out of consciousness as Catholics braced for the death of the Pontiff who battled communism and defended church orthodoxy.
