Beijing, China
A group of petitioners show their letters of complaint on a street outside a government office in Beijing July 20, 2008. With China's leaders demanding that none of the nation's simmering unrest sully the Olympic Games during August, officials and police have launched a nationwide onslaught of checks and barriers to stop discontented citizens reaching Beijing. Many citizens nursing well-thumbed dossiers filled with claims of police behaving like gangsters, lawless land grabs, and court corruption have sneaked around the security barriers in the hope of somehow winning attention for their woes. Some bide their time in rented village huts and makeshift shelters on the city's outskirts, avoiding the thousands of police and hired guards watching the government offices where petitioners are usually allowed to file grievances.
