Protesters against Ivory Coast's military ruler General Robert Guei's decision to have himself proclaimed President on Wednesday, October 25, 2000, try to stop the bleeding of one protester shot by soldiers at 500 metres from the Presidential Palace. At least 170 people died in violence after October's presidential election, when army ruler General Robert Guei tried to proclaim himself winner. He was toppled by supporters of Laurent Gbagbo, who was elected president.
